Teeth Whitening

Enhance the natural whiteness of teeth by removing stains or discolouration

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment used to enhance the natural whiteness of teeth by removing stains or discolouration on the tooth surface.

These treatments may be performed at your dental clinic or at home using a safe teeth whitening kit recommended by your dentist.

Teeth Whitening

Why is teeth whitening used?

There are many reasons why teeth can lose their whiteness. Teeth naturally become less white with age, and some people who are born with less white teeth choose to modify their appearance.

Teeth whitening treatments may also be the solution if your teeth have been discoloured by:

Tobacco from smoking

Tea, coffee, red wine and other drinks

Beetroot, berries and other dark foods and additives

Medication

Depending on the condition of your teeth and your desired outcome, professional teeth whitening may be carried out by your dentist or you can use a whitening kit in the comfort of your own home.

Professional teeth whitening

During your initial consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth to plan the most effective whitening treatment and determine whether any other dental treatments are needed.

A protective gel is applied to your gums and a hydrogen peroxide solution is administered to the teeth. This solution is activated by an ultraviolet light or laser and works to whiten the enamel and remove stains.

Professional teeth whitening is usually completed in around 30 minutes.

Home teeth whitening kits

If you choose a home whitening option, you should still have a consultation with your dentist first. We will show you how to use your teeth whitening kit and help you decide whether it’s the right option for you. We can also provide you with a custom-fitted mouth tray to ensure the best results.

Teeth whitening gel should be added to the tray, which you should place on your teeth for up to two hours daily. The duration of the treatment depends on your situation and desired results, but teeth whitening is usually complete within two weeks.

Is teeth whitening right for me?

Speaking to your dentist will help you to decide whether teeth whitening is the best option for modifying your smile, or if other treatments such as dental veneers or tooth bonding would be more effective.

You may not be suitable for some teeth whitening solutions if you have veneers, crowns or fillings, or if your teeth or gums are especially sensitive. If the discolouration of your teeth is due to an underlying oral health problem, this should be treated as a priority.

Am I suitable for dermal fillers?

If you feel conscious about the signs of ageing and you aren’t getting the results you want from skin care products, dermal fillers could be a good option for you.

We will explain what you can expect from dermal fillers during your consultation, as well as discussing other cosmetic treatments that could be of interest to you, such as teeth whitening.
